the modules

Modules are three as in the oldest idea of a car:
front module: with front wheels and engine
central module: with sits
rear module: with rear wheels, luggage and fuel storage.

modules are joinable by flanges.

General concepts of SiMoVe design are:

sizes:
a family of sizes hace to exist to define each family flange, for exemple micro, mini, small, media, large;
flanges:
only one type for size family can be certified.

tha project

description of the project

The project has the proposal to find a possible and makeble solution with the actual known technologies to the mobility system and its related ecologic problem.
The project must have the target to decrease the pollution level of the mobility on tyres and to change the way the car is lived by people. All this to change the mode but not the substance of utility and functions of the car its own.

Problems and solutions have to be identified.

quantity and kind of needed energy
air pollution
sound pollution
car crowds, stopped traffic, tails
speed with risks and energy consumer
dimension (and consequential occupied pubblic ground)

The car gives its service in different ways for different pourposes.
High speed for long highways travels.
With need of power to take a mountain road.
Slow speed, silence and low pollution in the city.
Long ranges for long travels.
Also very short range in the city…

Starting from this considerations the project has to build a modular car that in different configurations should absolve to the need of the user using less energy than possible, with the best compromise and the most efficiency.

idea

From the terrace upsteirs Monza's boxes I had a beautyfull sight over cars and drivers.
This is a Ferrari 512S (march 1970), driver is Arturo Merzario and the man from the back is Mauro Forghieri.
Beautyfull car all red, driver all white...

Here is september 1969, at the eve of the Italian Gran Prix and this is the yellow Mc Laren of Mr. Dennis Hulme.
I was supposed to have more pics froem the same sights with the car undressed... but! may be same where in same place.

anyway you can see that the car is made by three parts: the central part with the driving sit, the front part and the rear part with the engine.
The front and the rear parts where holded by "personal" frames so that it was possible to change the whole part (front or rear) in a short time... may be 2 - 3 hours.
Here where my idea is caming.

This is the first sketch I made. It's from 1973 and I was 23.
In This first thought front and rear modules where inserted in the central one but later I changed idea separating them definitly to have a more free final figure of the car.

The central module has two flanges with all the possible combinations to make mechanicals, electrical, hidraulical... joins from and to the front and the rear modules.

Front and rear modules have their own flanges...

fantasy

Imagine a certain situation of mobility in a word with the SiMoVe system.

Mr Brown enter his garage where he has a SiMoVe car.
The car has a front gasoline mudule with standard engine, 1.400cc, 80 Hp., indipendent suspension arms, standard breaks, abs, winter tyres...
This module is build by “Ansaldo Motori & Co. Limutec” and is provided by a leasing company called “LeaSiMoVing”.
The central module is a medium size family, 4 doors, 5 sits, controlled air system, radio, satellyte map driver, velvet clothes... ; build by “Anonymous Coach Co. & Co” and it's belonging to Mr. Brown.
The rear module is a "short type" one, very small luggage's room, indipendent suspension arms, standard breaks, abs, gasoline tank, towing bracket…: I's belonging to “Intercity Mobility Society”.
Mr Brown lives in a residential area otside the urban ground, jumps on the car with his son, school age, and drives to the city to get his son's school first and then his work office.
The starting country road becomes interurban and then motorway.
The car runs well, but you have to intend it in a different way then usual, like a tool to use for getting a service and not as a toy to enjoy playing races, fast starts and breaks, power slides turns, inhebriant engine rumble...
Certainly it's an absolute sure and safe vehicle, as every SiMoVe car, but not a sport car, large tyres, powered engine...
Near the town, still on the highway, Mr. Brown enters a PitStop area.
There are 40 mutation's stations and tails are ordered and definitly short; all this thanks to the Lord of the City Council who provided by licensing enough ordinances to build PitStop places in the best way all around the urban area, considering the traffic flowing, number of cars per minute, frequences and ways they drive in and out the area.
It's now Mr. Brown turn.
He's approaching the mutation's point driving a berth lane wich is provided by sensors able to exactly locate coming vehicles.
Theese sensors can talk to the vehicle to recognize size and part numbers of each module.
A technological arm comes out from a guide in the center of the line's lane and finds (driven by sensors) the connection point of the vehicle, attaches it, disconnect all vehicles controlls and put it in the exact mutation's position.
5 seconds all have been spent from the acces to the corridor start, running about 10 meters.
Hydraulic jacks from the central module put the vehicle in the exact position in the space.
Mr. Brown, from his window, puts his MoveCard in the mouth of a computerised terminal and sees on the monitor every detail about the car he is driving.
This Mr. Brown's MoveCard was emitted by the "Insurance and Interchange Common Society" and has several functions included Move Service, BankCard, Credit Card, Document Storage...
In the card all historical vehicle's informations are stored.
A big and clear monitor shows everything to Mr. Brown.
Memorized data at last mutation, data at the moment and avareges between them.

front module
runned for 1.200 miles at 1$/mile offered by "LeaSiMoVing"
runned 57.000 miles at all
runned 3.357 miles since last overhaul
life rest to next overhaul 643 miles
calculeted total life 300.000 miles
rest for total life 243.000 miles
tyres winter type
tyres total life...
tyres rest...
automatic component test: OK

same for the two other modules
...
...
Mr. Brown presses a button on the desk of the computerized terminal to select his choice:
"Electrical Standard City"
A robot, loocking like an elevator, approches the front module turning from the left, inserts its arms underneath it and, driven by sensors, firmly hooks the front module and separets it from the central part of the SiMoVe, and carries ti far from.
Backwards, turn again and goes away while from the left a second one arrives handling on its arms the electric standard front module requested by Mr. Brown.
The robot faces the front module to the central module, with perfectly lined flanges, joins modules each other and sets definitive connections.
This is a module with two electric engines for a total power of 2.500 watt, it allows a max. speed of 40 m/h, self limited, and offers a small luggage room between engines.
It's powered by the "Edison & Sons. Co. limited” and lelongs to “Uppertown Financial Moves".
Same things, at the same time, for the rear module that is muteted in an "electric city" one with a storage of accumulators that allows a 100 miles life to the car at the avarege speed of 30 m/h.
Powered by “Celladur s.r.l.” is belonging to “Compagnia Generale dell’Energia”.

Mr. Brown's car is mutated!
The consolle monitor shows the new configaration.

front module
1,3 $/mile offered by "Uppertown Financial Moves"
runned 2.000 miles at all
runned 0 miles since last overhaul life
rest to next overhaul 2.000 miles
calculeted total life 500.000 miles
rest for total life 498.000 miles
tyres....
total life...
tyres rest...
automatic component test: OK …
same for the two other modules
...

Consolle records the new data on teh Mr. Brown MoveCard, charges payment on the credit card fincion in the Move Card, gives credits to respective owners of the discharged modules, stamps a sheedle for Mr. Brown and gives back the MoveCard.

The technological arm takes the car out of the lane and Mr. Borwn goes.

All in about 5 to 10 minutes.

The technological arm is ready to accept next car after moving along its lane while mr. brown softly (electrically) goes away.
All must be complited in a period not so much longer then to fill tank.

Mr. Brown goes to his son's school... to work... time to go home.

Leaving the town he makes a new mutation to a diesel configuration “diesel LR” (large range).
He take a villege called, BelloSito, in a ecological protected area.
The major of BelloSito has ordered new restrictions for CO2 tu 0 value so that no endothermic engines can enter the area.
There are 6 smal pit stop all around the area on the access lines.
Mr Brown makes the mutation....

This system can be adopted at once
Infact a SiMoVe vehicle with gasoline configuration could be normally used in the present situation; at the moment no chances to mutate... but a new concept in running.

As the first PitStop would grow the vehicle could mutate.
At the beginning only one place to mutate, then 2, 4, 16, 100...
This system would go against a certain way to look at the every day car: no image from the car. no powerfull, no strongness, no richness in the same way as today... no dragsters at lights!
But tool, at first, and then a different status symbol may be with new values as safety, automatic controls...

Modules could be certified for the use you have to do with them, so city modules could be autolimited for speed or they could have the ability to receive informations about lights and give alert, speed limit in that road and apply it, get information on traffic and suggest different ways to get the target...

The central module would be the real property car of this new driver: he would enter ever the same room with his confort, his things and benefits.

The first working prototype could be made at once and shown in a car exibition or to political power could have a good resonance.
